Programs Supporting U.S. Teachers and Language Teaching in U.S. Schools, Colleges and Universities
Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants
This program awards scholarships to foreign teachers from countries where critical-need languages are spoken to serve as language informants and teaching assistants at U.S. universities, colleges and high schools for one academic year at the beginning of their careers. More than 200 critical-need language teaching assistants were placed in U.S. classrooms in 2006 and nearly 300 placements were made in 2007. The program plans to maintain this level in 2008.
Intensive Summer Language Institutes for U.S. Teachers
This program sends U.S. critical-need language teachers abroad for intensive summer study. Six American teachers of Mandarin Chinese participated in intensive summer language institutes abroad in 2007. In summer 2008, intensive summer language institutes are planned for teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.
