Critical Language Enhancement Award

The Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA) provides funding for three-to-six months of intensive language study. CLEA is available for eligible participants of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program who intend to use one of the following languages for their Fulbright project and beyond:

  • Arabic (all dialects)
  • Bangla/Bengali
  • Bhasa Indonesia
  • Chinese (Mandarin Only)
  • Gujarati
  • Hindi
  • Marathi
  • Punjabi
  • Russian
  • Urdu

After completing the CLEA and Fulbright U.S. Student Grant, participants will be better prepared to pursue higher levels of language study as part of a continuing academic program or to begin careers that require the use of critical languages.

Application Deadline:
Applicants must apply for CLEA in conjunction with submitting a Fulbright U.S. Student Program application.  The Fulbright U.S. Student Program application is currently closed.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for the CLEA you must:

  1. Be a Fulbright U.S. Student Program participant who intends to use one of the eligible critical languages to complete a Fulbright project in China, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco and Russia.
  2. Meet a minimum language requirement.
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to continuing your critical language development in your professional and/or academic career.
