June 2011 Quarterly Meeting

The quarterly meeting of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) was held in Washington, DC, on June 6 and 7, 2011.
On June 6, Members of the Board attended a reception at the residence of Peruvian Ambassador and Mrs. Luis M. Valdivieso, both alumni of the Fulbright Program, in honor of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB), alumni and administrators of the U.S.-Peru Fulbright Program. Nine ambassadors throughout the world are Fulbright alumni.
At the June 7 meeting, Vice Chair Shelby Lewis, Members Mark Brzezinski and Robert McCallum briefed the Board on their travels to Mississippi Valley State University, China and the United Kingdom, respectively. Also in attendance were FSB Members Gary Edson, and by phone, Lisa Caputo and Dina Powell. A highlight of the meeting was a panel of Binational Commission Executive Directors Arnaud representing France, New Zealand, and Peru.
The Board also heard from Assistant Secretary Ann Stock and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Adam Ereli about the English Teaching Assistantship program, the Assistant Secretary’s travel to Iraq for the Fulbright 60th anniversary as well as travels to Indonesia, Malaysia and Turkey. They also announced the launch of the new J-1 Visa website as well as the winners of the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund. The Branch Chief for the Western Hemisphere updated the Board on Fulbright programs in that region. She also gave a brief report on the launch of the Fulbright NEXUS Program that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina in May, 2011.
FSB Chair Anita McBride also attended this program launch and spoke at the welcome reception hosted by U.S. Ambassador to Argentina Vilma Socorro Martinez.
