| Figurine made of copper, bronze, silver, gold, or tumbaga. Usually human or animal (camelid) shape. Often found in pairs. Range in size from miniatures (2 cm. in height) to small statuettes (50 cm. in height). Lauraques are small (3 cm. - 7 cm.) amulet-like figurines of brass shaped like humans dating from the Formative Cultures to the Inca. This example of a Pre-Columbian anthropomorphic statue represents a man. It has been reused in historical periods by the Uru Chipaya women as a receptacle for their braided hair during the transition rituals when a woman marries. Size varies from 3 cm. to 7 cm. | |
