Description of Designated List Category Subject to Import Restrictions:
Statues are made of wood, maguey, gesso, silver, gold, bronze, alabaster or other stone, and often decorated with gilt paint. Typical statuary for this period includes depictions of patron saints (santos/santas), angels, Christ, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and the Holy Family. Gold and silver crowns and other adornments in precious metals and precious stone are often found on these statues. Some are dressed with brocade and tapestry cloth made from gold and silver threads. Some are holding objects such as swords. Size varies from 30 cm. to two meters.

During the Colonial period in Bolivia there were many images of standing, or fragments of saints made of wood (cedar) with finely finished surfaces. The techniques were wood carvings (cherubs and angels of retables) and images made in maguey (the arms and feet). The images were finished in glued fabric for the bodies. The "dressed" images have a variety of embroidered dresses with lace and have other accessories like helmets and swords. These particular images had glass eyes, mother of pearl teeth and natural hair. They are wearing expensive clothes made from gold and silver threads and pearls. These images were popular during the 16th to 18th centuries.
