With or without frame. The archangel is a central theme. Oil painting is found on objects as small as reliquaries (3 cm.), mid-sized canvas (one square meter), or wall-sized renditions. This a group of paintings in different techniques such as oil, tempera, or mixed on canvas, metal, wood. There can be as many as fifteen in a series. On each painting there is a female figure, mainly young and well dressed. Saints are usually identified by the palm leaves in their hands and a particular item attributed to that saint; a crown; a wheel; a tower; a sword; a sheep; flowers in the dress; and musical instruments. These paintings are characteristics of the Lake Titicaca area during the 17th century. | |
