Description of Designated List Category Subject to Import Restrictions:
Oil paintings: Includes depictions of patron saints (santos/santas), angels, Christ, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and the Holy Family on wood, metal, canvas (lienzo), and other cloth. With or without frame. The archangel is a central theme. Oil painting is found on objects as small as reliquaries (3 cm.), mid-sized canvas (one square meter), or wall-sized renditions. In these particular examples the Virgin Mary is depicted. These types of paintings of the Virgin Mary are varied in style and technique. However, the Virgin Mary is always the central figure around whom the painting is composed. Mary could be standing, seating with or without the baby Jesus, with other saints or angels, but she is always the focal point of the painting. This type of iconography attests to the devotion of the people of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
