Description of Designated List Category Subject to Import Restrictions:
Oil paintings include depictions of patron saints (santos/santas), angels, Christ, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and the Holy Family on wood, metal, canvas (lienzo), and other cloth. With or without frame. The archangel is a central theme. Oil painting is found on objects as small as reliquaries (3 cm.), mid-sized canvas (one square meter), or wall-sized renditions.

This painting represents the Virgin Mary with a white tunic and blue cape. Sometimes the cape is extended as a triangle. She stands over a half moon, the world and a serpent. Mary is praying. On the upper part of the scene are the images of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, who is depicted as a pigeon. Sometimes the Holy trinity is represented as three identical people crowning the Virgin Mary. In this example the yellow background has clouds and angels. These images were very popular during the Colonial period in Bolivia.
