| Oil paintings include depictions of patron saints (santos/santas), angels, Christ, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and the Holy Family on wood, metal, canvas (lienzo), and other cloth. With or without frame. The archangel is a central theme. Oil painting is found on objects as small as reliquaries (3 cm.), mid-sized canvas (one square meter), or wall-sized renditions. Paintings like this representing the male saints are usually men of all ages dressed in a variety of fashions. Sometimes they wear the habit of a religious group, others wear a tunic and cape or different kind of clothing. They can be praying, standing or kneeling. In the background are the figures of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Father, the baby Jesus, angels, and crosses. If the depicted saint is not holding the elements that identify him, they are present elsewhere in the painting. | |
