| Oil paintings include depictions of patron saints (santos/santas), angels, Christ, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and the Holy Family on wood, metal, canvas (lienzo), and other cloth. With or without frame. The archangel is a central theme. Oil painting is found on objects as small as reliquaries (3 cm.), mid-sized canvas (one square meter), or wall-sized renditions. This example of angels with military dress is common in the Colonial period in Bolivia. They are found in the 17th century in the Lake Titicaca region and are most often found in the presbytery of the church. Usually depicted as young angels they are dressed as soldiers of the Austrian guard. Noted for their unique costume; lacey collars and wrists, colorful thigh high socks and elaborate jackets. They are carrying a saber and have a cape. These angels are always standing in an elegant pose. | |
