| Oil paintings include depictions of patron saints (santos/santas), angels, Christ, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and the Holy Family on wood, metal, canvas (lienzo), and other cloth. With or without frame. The archangel is a central theme. Oil painting is found on objects as small as reliquaries (3 cm.), mid-sized canvas (one square meter), or wall-sized renditions. Paintings like this representing the male saints are usually of middle age men, young or old men dressed in different manners. Sometimes they wear the habit of a the religious group, others are dressed in a tunic and cape or different kind of clothing. They can be praying, standing or kneeling. The iconography of Santiago --Saint James-- is very well known during the Colonial period in Bolivia. Saint James is often depicted with a beard and black hair, wearing a hat and riding a horse. He is sometimes depicted in contemporary dress. | |
