| Large-scale human and animal figure, life-size portrait heads, and life-size votive objects, including fragments of statues. These are often found in temples and sanctuaries in Magna Graecia, Etruria and Latium. Approximate date: 7th c. to 1st c. B.C. This example is an over-lifesize standing female statue representing the goddess Minerva wearing a helmet. On her chest is an aegis with the gorgon. She is armed with a sword and a decorated shield. Monumental terracotta statuary such as this had its greatest development in Etruria and Latium where marble was as yet unknown in the 6th to 4th c. B.C. | |
