Between the Lines

Between the Lines students take a break between writing workshops.

Between the Lines students take a break between writing workshops.

The Between the Lines (BTL) program brings 12 teenage writers from Arabic-speaking countries to the United States for two weeks of intensive creative writing workshops and cultural exchange.  During the program, students spend their mornings working with American peers and their afternoons in Arabic writing workshops.

The program also features pedagogy courses for BTL chaperones, who are also talented writers from Arabic-speaking countries, evening readings by noted University of Iowa faculty members, an end-of-session U.S./Arabic student talent show and a final printed booklet of poems and essays by the BTL students.
