IWP Digital Archives
In 2003, the University of Iowa's School of Library and Information Science began preserving and cataloguing the archives of the International Writing Program to make recorded sounds and images from the program available to scholars and the public. Visit the archive to view and hear writings from the 1960s to the present.
International Writing Program
Each year, between 20 and 35 poets, fiction writers, dramatists, journalists, screenwriters, and literary translators from around the world spend a semester in Iowa City exploring the creative process of writing. Since it's founding in 1967 at the University of Iowa, the International Writing Program (IWP) has brought together more than 1,000 rising and established literary stars from 120 countries to develop a community of writing to enhance international understanding. The program provides the world's writers with a sense of American innovation and openness, and exposes U.S. readers, writers, and artists to international perspectives on the art and process of writing.
IWP participants also benefit from the rich literary heritage and resources of Iowa City, which was recently named a UNESCO City of Literature. Candidates for the program are nominated based on their demonstrated literary talent, broad appeal, and interest in contributing to the creative writing culture in their home countries. Nominees must be fluent in English, comfortable with cross-cultural dynamics, and have at least one published volume of work, or works that have appeared in significant publications over a period of at least two years. By bringing together these writers from various cultures, the IWP works toward its mission to discover, translate, exhibit and promote world-class excellence in writing.
