The American Studies Collection

bookThe American Studies Collection was created by an endowment fund established by the Congress of the United States "in order to promote a thorough understanding of the United States" abroad. Designed expressly for university libraries outside the United States, the resulting collection of more than 1,300 volumes is a selective but authoritative library of literature and scholarship intended to provide foreign students, teachers and scholars with the opportunity to increase their understanding of American life and institutions, past and present.

The core of the Collection is a comprehensive selection of more than 1,000 titles, which were recommended by leading American scholars in the humanities and social sciences. Taken as a whole, these volumes suggest the diversity of American life and culture as well as the dynamism of recent scholarship. This part of the Collection includes major works from virtually all the disciplines that are germane to the study of American civilization. The collection is especially rich in titles in history, politics, government and law and includes other works in literary criticism, contemporary American fiction, poetry and belles lettres as well as outstanding works in the fine and performing arts, American philosophy and religion, and other aspects of U.S. society and culture.

Library of America
The Collection also contains the multi-volume Library of America, one of the most distinguished literary series in the history of American publishing--virtually a self-contained library of American thought and culture. The Library of America currently includes some 90 volumes that bring together in authoritative texts the landmark writings of classic American authors. Within the collection are the essential works of America's novelists and poets, historians and philosophers, journalists and statesmen. In some cases, the complete works of an author are contained in three or four compact volumes.

Documents of Democracy
Rounding out the Collection are these volumes, which include primary source documents and the private papers of key historical figures, appeared initially in conjunction with a major publishing project undertaken by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Approximately 100 volumes from that series were especially chosen for inclusion in this collection by a panel of scholarly experts working in consultation with the Commission. The panel has selected titles that exemplify the most significant aspects of the American past and are broadly representative of the chronological sweep of American history.

Library Sites
Working in collaboration with Department of State posts worldwide, the following institutions were selected to receive a set of the American Studies Collection. Each institution entered into a formal agreement with the U.S. mission in their country to house, maintain and provide open access to the collection.
