Arizona State University is implementing a three-week program for 28 religious leaders and scholars from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo to travel to the United States in two cohorts (January 2008 and January 2009) for interactive seminars, meetings, and discussions intended to enrich participants’ understanding of the democratic values underlying religious expression and religious diversity in American and Southeast European civil society. The program includes two reciprocal exchanges by Americans to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo for 14 days for an interactive travel and residency program.

Boston College is conducting six exchange programs with Ireland and Northern Ireland focusing on political organization, community policing, education, corporate social engagement, small business development, road safety, and the role sports can play in community development. Project activities include site visits in Washington, DC; Nashville, TN; San Francisco, CA; and Atlanta, GA as well as seminars and workshops at Boston College for approximately 80 participants. The grant will also support workshops in Northern Ireland and Ireland and support continuing alumni activities.

Subject: Developing positive relations between the United States and minority communities
This grant is examining and comparing means of integrating immigrant and minority populations in Belgium and the United States and is establishing positive relations between the United States and (primarily Muslim) minorities in Belgium. Twelve representatives of non-governmental organizations and other professionals from Colorado, Georgia, Michigan, and Washington, together with 32 practitioners from Belgium, are taking part in a series of workshops and study tours in Belgium and in the United States. There will be a final workshop in Belgium, as well as the creation of a web portal for program participants.

Subject: Understanding Muslim Life in the United States
The Institute for Training and Development is implementing a three-week exchange and residency programs for 24 clerics and scholars from Macedonia and Kosovo who are traveling to Massachusetts, Illinois, New York, and Washington, D.C., in two cohorts (February 2008 and November 2008) for site visits, consultations, and discussions intended to help the delegates better understand and be able to communicate to audiences in their home countries how Islam is practiced in an open, diverse, and democratic society. The program also explores how ethnically, nationally, and culturally diverse American Muslims can worship together and live with communities of other faiths without violence. The 12-day program in Macedonia and Kosovo for five U.S. participants (in August 2008 and June 2009) includes meetings, visits to institutions, and seminars or symposia directed at the larger public in each geographical region.

IREX is implementing a three-week exchange and residency program for 24 religious and youth leaders from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia in two cohorts (Spring and Fall 2008). The project includes site visits, meetings, and discussions intended to establish a social and religious dialogue, to identify and support religious and influential lay leaders, to mobilize and engage youth, and to provide new models and opportunities for open dialogue and building regional cooperation based on tolerance. Two groups of six American interlocutors are traveling to the region for one week each. Follow-on entails participant implementation of action plans.

Subject: Improving understanding and fostering consensus on U.S.-Turkey Relations
Under this grant, World Learning is implementing a five-phase exchange program for up to 38 young Turkish leaders and three U.S. experts that focusing on foreign policy dialogue between emerging political leaders. Project activities include a ten-day residential program in Washington, D.C., that consists of a series of workshops, seminars, two-day internships, meetings and debates. There is also a five-day study tour to Cleveland, OH. The participants will develop action plans to be implemented upon their return to Turkey.
