Under this grant, Center for Civic Education is conducting a three-phase exchange program for 30 participants from India, Kazakhstan and the United States. Project activities commence with a delegation of educators traveling to India to observe an advanced civic education program. The second phase is a reciprocal visit to the United States by educators from India and Kazakhstan. The program’s final component is a training event for all program participants hosted in Kazakhstan.

Subject: Training NGO leaders and teachers to lead youth in responsible environmental action
This grant is designed to improve the abilities of environmental NGO leaders and classroom teachers to lead youth in new research, critical data analysis and responsible environmental action. Three U.S. educators/trainers travel to Bangladesh, India and Nepal to conduct a two-week training program. Following the training, a total of nine educators (three each from Bangladesh, India and Nepal) travel to New York and New Jersey for two weeks of instruction in environmental action techniques with their U.S. peers. Follow-up training in Bangladesh, India and Nepal take place when three pairs of U.S. participants travel to the region for two weeks to work with new teachers. During the course of the project, there is virtual collaboration among the teachers and students, and follow-on activities with alumni take place through community action projects.

This grant brings together communities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan to address the issues of adolescent health and youth development. The project includes a series of intensive workshops and supporting activities designed to train youth leaders in civic responsibility; NGO management and leadership; adolescent health and youth development; and cross cultural exchange and diversity. Small grants are awarded to individuals to implement community-based initiatives. In addition, a comprehensive Adolescent Health Resource Directory and quarterly e-newsletter is being developed and distributed in both the United States and in Central Asia.

Subject: Promoting stewardship of the environment and cultural preservation through trainings for teachers
This grant fosters active and responsible citizenship by promoting stewardship of the environment and cultural preservation. The project activities include a four-week institute hosted by Plymouth State University for 20 Pakistani education leaders, and the development of master plans by participants to support local environmental stewardship and cultural preservation, which includes the awarding of small grants to support the implementation of these master plans. There is also a site visit by eight Americans to Lahore, Pakistan, as well as a follow-up in-country workshop for all current and past participants of the Plymouth State University summer institutes as a part of this project.

Subject: Training journalists in the field of HIV/AIDS reporting
This grant focuses on the training of Indian, Pakistani, and Sri Lankan journalists to strengthen their ability to report on HIV/AIDS, with particular emphasis on professional norms in reporting and the news/source relationship between NGOs and journalists. Project activities include 9 workshops in 8 different cities for 10-20 participants each, including journalists/editors, educators, and NGO staffers, in three different installments, as well as a workshop in Sri Lanka for 20 journalism educators and NGO staffers from the United States and the other three participating countries. During this grant, there are also two three-week workshops and shadow internships in the United States for a total of 8 journalists, educators, and NGO staffers during each workshop.

Subject: Strengthening broadcast media capacities and leadership capacities of women journalists
This grant focuses on improving visual storytelling in broadcast media in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan, with a secondary focus on strengthening the leadership capabilities of women. Project activities include two workshops in each of the three countries for both broadcast journalists and aspiring women leaders, as well as workshops with participants coming from all three countries for intensive training at the University of Oklahoma. Other program activities include: videoconferences to enable American experts to speak to selected groups of participants to follow up on their experiences after training, and a project website.
