Name of Organization: Breakthrough Club of Sedgwick County
Location: Wichita, KS

Subject: Improving Mental Health Service in Kenya

This grant supports the Breakthrough Club's efforts to improve mental health services in both Kenya and the United States through needs analysis, workshops, and project collaboration. Six Kenyans are visiting the United States for two weeks, and six Americans are traveling in Kenya for two weeks. Each group is visiting mental health service organizations and conducting projects in both countries. Breakthrough's interactive website facilitates communication both among participants and between participants and related organizations worldwide.

Name of Organization: International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX)
Location: Washington, DC

Subject: Strengthening Civil Society in Iran through Improved Maternal and Child Health Services

This grant is expanding discourse on civil society and active citizenship by bringing together 16 Iranian and five U.S. participants for site visits at public and private hospitals, non-profit organizations, federal and state oversight agencies, and rural clinics in or near Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and New York. Participants discuss maternal and child health issues with the Iranians learning about how public, private, and non-profit entities interact with citizens to form health policy in a democratic society. The American participants are traveling to Iran for ten days to conduct site visits and participate in discussions about health education and cooperation between policy makers and healthcare providers. Both the Iranian and American participants are health providers, medical university faculty, and community leaders active in public health and women's issues. The grant is being executed according to all relevant laws and policies regarding assistance to, or interaction with, the Government of Iran.

Name of Organization: Magee-Womens Research Institute
Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Subject: Improving Health Education and Fostering Civic Activism in Central Asia

This grant brings together communities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan to address the issues of adolescent health and youth development. The project includes a series of intensive workshops and supporting activities designed to train youth leaders in civic responsibility; NGO management and leadership; adolescent health and youth development; and cross cultural exchange and diversity. Small grants are awarded to individuals to implement community-based initiatives. In addition, a comprehensive Adolescent Health Resource Directory and quarterly e-newsletter is being developed and distributed in both the United States and in Central Asia.
