Ten Afghan YES Alumni Volunteer in Kashmir to Help in
Earthquake Relief Efforts
Alumni of the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program considered what
they could do as a community service project. “Go to Pakistan!” they
agreed, to help their neighbors. Between December 23 and January 1 the
group traveled to Pakistan –- where they assisted a local NGO in gathering
data in support of relief efforts. Of his experience one alumnus said,
“I would like to say that all humans are part of each other, like very
close friends, so that’s why it says ‘A friend in need, is a friend
indeed’.” In Islamabad, prior to their departure, the U.S. Embassy held
a ceremony in honor of the alumni. Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Peter
Kovach encouraged the youths to continue their volunteer work.
Already planning head, co-alumni coordinators will travel to Islamabad on February 14 to meet with Pakistani
alumni of the YES program. One of the coordinators said, “We are going to build a relationship
between the YES students in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are the youths
who will plant seeds of peace for the next generation.
