The English Language
Fellow Program, a short-term program funded by the Department
of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is designed to assist
with the improvement of English teaching capability in selected institutions
around the world in order to contribute to mutual understanding between
the people of the United States and peoples abroad.
-
By contributing to the improvement of
English language teaching, the English Language Fellow Program aids
U. S. Embassies in their goals of facilitating democratic institution
building and encouraging participation in the global economy.
-
Fellows conduct special projects in teacher
training, methodology, curriculum development, and needs analysis
at universities, teacher training institutions, ministries of education,
binational centers, and related language education institutions.
-
Senior Fellows hold a Master's Degree
or more in ESL/EFL or a closely related field and have a substantial
background in teacher training.
-
English Language Fellows (junior) hold
a recent Master's Degree (within the past 5 years) in ESL/EFL or a
closely related field. A substantial portion of a junior Fellow's
time is spent in classroom teaching.

Short-term English Language Specialists:
The English Language Specialist program recruits American academics in
the field of TEFL/TESL and Applied Linguistics for short-term assignments
(two to six weeks) overseas or as speakers for video or teleconferences
with overseas audiences. Specialists are requested by American Embassies
overseas and are recruited by the Office of English Language Programs.
Depending on the request from the Embassy, specialists may work on curriculum
projects, teacher training seminars, textbook development, English for
Special Purposes, program evaluation or other well-defined short projects.
In requesting program support, an American Embassy will normally suggest
a candidate; if they do not, then the Office of English Language Programs
contacts and recruits an EL Specialist from among well-known academics
in the field. EL Specialists receive an honorarium and round-trip travel
from the Office of English Language Programs. Per diem, in-country travel
and other expenses are covered by the American Embassy or host institution.
abroad. (Further information
