Introduction: Passion for Life
The illustrations on this page were created by students who had been
instructed to think about the beautiful things in life. (Click
here for an article that explains this activity.)
One of the beautiful things in Washington, D.C. is the Thomas Jefferson
Building of the Library of Congress. Open the full spread of the cover
of this issue, and look up into the dome of the Reading Room of the Jefferson
Building. This building—a testament to Americas appreciation
of literature, science, and art—was completed in 1897. It was known
then as the Library of Congress Building. In 1980, it was named for Thomas
Jefferson, the principal founder of the Library. As its 100th birthday
approached, the building underwent a decade-long renovation. It reopened
to the public in May 1997, restored to its original splendor.
As you read this issue of English Teaching Forum, imagine you are sitting
at a reading table beneath the Librarys beautiful dome
and
enjoy a lovely reading experience.
