International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP)

The International Leadership in Education Program brings outstanding teachers from the Near East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Western Hemisphere to the United States to learn about the latest advancements in educational methodology and policy, and to develop the leadership skills necessary to implement and promote change within their schools and home communities. The semester program combines academic coursework at the school of education at a U.S. university and has a significant a teaching component in a U.S. secondary school. Participating teachers take coursework related to teaching methodologies, curriculum writing, teaching strategies for their home environment, educational leadership, technology for the classroom, and English speaking and writing. The eight-week internship at a secondary school actively engages participants with American teachers and students. Trips to U.S. cultural sites and academic support are provided for participants throughout the program. International teachers also have the opportunity to work with their host secondary schools to apply for alumni grants. U.S. participants make a two-week reciprocal visit to the sending countries where they collaborate on joint projects to build on the linkages established during the U.S.-based exchange. This program is administered by IREX and more information can be found at http://www.irex.org/programs/ilep/.
