Assistant Secretary of State William B. Bader
Visits Cardozo Senior High School
to Celebrate International Education Week

November 15, 2000

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs William B. Bader visited Francis L. Cardozo Senior High School in Washington, D.C. on November 15, 2000, where he met with students, faculty and administrators. The occasion was to observe International Education Week, proclaimed by President Clinton for November 13-17, 2000.

Cardozo ROTC cadets greeted Dr. Bader and escorted him on the visit. Cardozo's Principal, Mr. Reginald Ballard, welcomed Dr. Bader and arranged briefing by Assistant Superintendent of High Schools Dr. Wilma Bonner. Dr. Bader highlighted the importance of International Education Week and discussed the President's International Education Policy, which stresses increased global awareness and the need for nations to learn from one another to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The policy encourages international student exchange, foreign language study and a host of activities to increase mutual understanding across borders.

Dr. Bader visited with classes in English As A Second Language, Constitutional Law, and Spanish. He spoke about what it meant in his own life and career to have undertaken a Fulbright grant to Munich, Germany after World War II. He encouraged the students to learn more about other countries and languages and to explore opportunities to visit and study in foreign countries.

Dr. Bader commended Cardozo Senior High School for the strong support and encouragement it provides its students and faculty and for building a strong foundation for international education. Mr. Ballard and Cardozo English as a Second Language teacher Spencer Salas are both Fulbright program alumni. Since their return to the United States, they have been involved in a variety of activities to share their Fulbright experiences and to nurture the relationships they have established across borders.
