Ambassador J. Thomas Schieffer will attend a lunch hosted by the Vice-Chancellor
of the Australian National University, Canberra, and present a grant from
the Office of Public Affairs to support the development of the University's
American Studies Program, one of only two academic undertakings of its
kind in Australia. Later in November, the Ambassador will participate
in the Australian National Museum's Talkback Classroom program, a monthly
20-minute radio forum for middle and senior secondary students broadcast
on Australian Broadcast Corporation radio's Triple J morning show Australia-wide.
The program allows students the opportunity to engage key public figures
in discussions on issues of importance to young people; this day, three
Australian students will interview the Ambassador on the broad issue of
the post-September 11 world, with a particular exploration of this event
for relations between Australia and the U.S. .

The Public Affairs Section and the Korean-American Educational Commission
(Fulbright Commission) are organizing and participating in a regional
conference, supported by the Department of State's Bureau of Educational
and Cultural Affairs on the use of technology in study abroad advising.
Study abroad advisers in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, New Zealand,
and Ukraine will attend the three-day conference to be held at the Fulbright
Commission's U.S. Education Center in Seoul. The conference will highlight
the fundamental shift in advising in recent years to electronic means
and will discuss the various roles of technology, websites and the Internet
in advising centers. It is particularly appropriate that this conference
be held in Korea, the country with the greatest broadband penetration
rate in the world. The conference will bring together specialists from
around the region to promote networking among U.S.-State Department-supported
