Some 130 foreign Fulbright academics and professionals from approximately
70 countries will gather to explore America's role in global health. The
conference, entitled "International Cooperation in a Borderless World:
Exploring the U.S. Role in Global Health Governance," will take place
on April 2-5 at the Wyndham City Center Hotel in Washington, D.C. The
Fulbright Scholar Program and this conference are sponsored by the U.S.
Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
World-renowned economist Jeffrey D. Sachs, the director of the Earth
Institute at Columbia University and special advisor to U.N. Secretary
General Kofi Annan, will deliver the keynote address on Wednesday, April
2, at a dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The strength of the United States' commitment to global health will be
explored by representatives from the Global Interdependence Initiative,
the Aspen Institute, and the Pan American Health Organization on Thursday,
April 3, at 10:45 a.m. Also participating is Nils Daulaire, president
and CEO of the Global Health Council.
Discussing the private sector role in global health will be Sally Stansfield
of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Jeff Sturchio of the Merck Policy
Division; and James Smith of the American International Health Alliance
at a panel to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3. Global health ethics
will be presented by Peter A. Singer, director of the University of Toronto
Joint Centre for Bioethics on Friday, April 4.
Ten Fellows from the Fulbright New Century Scholars (NCS) Program will
also participate in the conference as panelists and speakers. The NCS
Program is a new Fulbright initiative that brings 30 top researchers and
professionals from around the world together to concentrate for one year
on a transnational topic.
