Eleven
Indonesian teachers and youth program directors are playing an integral
role in creating three recreational youth sports leagues in Indonesia.
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsored this program
through the Institute for Training and Development in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Participants learned about organization and management of youth sports
and sports coach training.
The exchange took place May 10-30 and incorporated technical presentations,
shadow internships, and cultural and recreational activities. The technical
presentation topics included: History and Overview of Youth Sports in
America, Principles of Coaching Youth Sport, Administration of Youth Sport
Programs, and Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries.
Site visits and day trips to Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts and
New York City exposed the participants to various recreational sports
outlets.
In
Indonesia, few recreational sports leagues exist. The organizational support
for league development will be provided by the National Association for
Islamic Youth, a mosque-based organization that runs youth programs in
several communities.
To complete the exchange, several American recreational sports professionals
and volunteers will be invited to visit Indonesia.
