Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is sponsoring events in Washington, DC this week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program was initiated 20 years ago to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the first German immigration to North America. The program is supported under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961 by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, as well as the German Bundestag. Since its inception, over 16,000 students have participated in the CBYX exchange. For more information on the program, visit http://exchanges.state.gov.

CBYX exchanges are among the more than 30,000 annual exchanges managed by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Bureau administers a wide range of academic, professional and cultural programs to promote cross-cultural understanding.

Scheduled Events and Venues:

1. Congressional Honors Breakfast on Capitol Hill, Thursday, June 24
A Congressional Honors Breakfast will be held in the Rayburn Building on Capitol Hill (8am to 10am). Alumni, host families and German and American dignitaries will be in attendance. Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE), Representative Tom Lantos (D-CA), and Representative Ralph Regula (R-OH) will all be recognized for their participation and support of exchange programs over the years. An award also will be presented to Members of the Deutscher Bundestag, accepted by Wolfgang Boernsen, MdB. Media representatives are welcome to attend.

2. 20th Anniversary Celebration at Georgetown University, Thursday, June 24
An event will be held at the Georgetown University Campus (2pm to 5pm) with alumni, host families, and German and American staff. Current German students will present cultural projects on diversity. A reception will follow. Media representatives are welcome to attend.

3. Reception at German Embassy
On Wednesday, June 23, the Embassy of Germany will sponsor a reception in the Embassy House (6pm to 8pm) to honor German and American program alumni. The point of contact for this event is Oliver Schramm, phone (202) 298-4246.
