Second Group of “Partnerships for Learning
Undergraduate Studies” (PLUS) Students Set to Begin Classes for the
Fall at U.S. Universities
The Department of State welcomes the second group of “Partnerships
for Learning Undergraduate Studies” (PLUS) program students, who are
set to enroll at American colleges and universities for the fall semester.
There are 100 students in this cohort of PLUS students, joining the
71 students who began the program in 2005. The new group of students
come from the Middle East and North Africa, and was expanded this year
to include students from countries in South Asia.
The program, which selects outstanding students who have completed
two years of undergraduate study at home country or regional institutions,
provides scholarships for enhancing their English language and study
skills at American institutions before completing an undergraduate degree
program and graduating from a U.S. university. The program is designed
for students from non-elite sectors of society who have demonstrated
leadership potential and are highly committed to returning to make a
difference in their home countries.
Applicants were assessed on their academic ability, motivation, adaptability
and leadership qualities. Nominations were put forward to regional panels,
comprised of American and area professors and exchange professionals.
The PLUS students will begin classes for the fall semester in the following
schools:
Ashland University (OH)
Dickinson College (PA)
Nazareth College (NY)
Beloit College (WI)
Juniata College (PA)
University of Nebraska
Central College (IA)
Kent State University (OH)
University of North Alabama
Chatham College (PA)
Lewis & Clark College (OR)
Roger Williams Univ. (RI)
Colorado State University
Montana State University
University of South Carolina
Denison College (OH)
The students in the PLUS program represent a segment of the approximately
30,000 individuals who participate in Department of State exchange programs
each year. For more information about this program or other Bureau of
Educational and Cultural Affairs exchanges, visit http://exchanges.state.gov/.
