NSLI for Youth (NSLI-Y) Seeks Applicants for its 2009 and 2010 Programs

Learn a new language! Experience a new world! The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Youth Programs Division is seeking applicants now for its 2009/2010 National Security Language Institute for Youth (NSLI-Y) programs.

The deadline for the scholarship application to the program is Feb. 2, 2009.

Approximately 550 American high school students will be selected for overseas studies in the summer and academic year of 2009 and 2010. While the 2006, 2007 and 2008 programs were comprised only of summer institutes for Arabic and Mandarin Chinese, the consortium of groups making this program happen - headed by the American Councils for International Education - is implementing programs in five additional languages: Farsi, Hindi, Korean, Russian and Turkish. The Farsi and Hindi programs are only summer programs. The Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Russian and Turkish programs will be available for summer, semester and academic year.

Visit NSLI for Youth to apply for the program online, or visit the NSLI-Y homepage for additional information about the program. To qualify, high school students must be ages 15 to 18, U.S. citizens, enrolled or recently graduated, and have at least a 2.5 GPA.
