WNBA and NBA Players to Travel to Bahrain
Women’s National Basketball Association player Andrea Stinson and National Basketball Association player Jerome Williams will visit Bahrain from June 13-18 to conduct clinics for girls and boys aged 11-18. This Sports Envoy program is being organized between the U.S. Department of State in partnership with the NBA. The U.S. Embassy in Manama, the General Organization for Youth and Sports, and the Bahrain Basketball Association are hosting the program, which will take place at the Zain Basketball Arena. The program will include technique drills and team building activities, and offer the participants an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the American players. The clinics are an outstanding opportunity for Bahraini youth to discover how achievement in sports can be transformed into the development of life skills, emphasizing the value of leadership, teamwork, and respect.
Andrea Stinson became one of the first members of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Charlotte Sting team in Charlotte, North Carolina in January 1997. She helped build the franchise from the ground up. In her eight years with the team, Stinson was one of the best open court players to play the game. Stinson continues to give back to the community by directing basketball camps and running her foundation that supports younger female athletes and their dreams of becoming college and/or WNBA players.
Jerome Williams is known as one of the sport’s most emotional and animated players, and a perennial fan favorite throughout his career. He displayed intensity and a strong work ethic both on and off the court, working tirelessly to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. Drafted out of Georgetown University by the Detroit Pistons with the 26th pick of the 1996 NBA Draft, Williams played in 587 games over nine seasons, averaging 6.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Throughout his NBA career, Williams played for the Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, and New York Knicks.
The opening ceremony of the NBA basketball program will take place on Sunday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zain Basketball Arena. It is open to the public.
