At-a-Glance

The Department of State supports official U.S. participation at select international art exhibitions called biennales. Organized through the Cultural Programs Division, the Department's support ensures that the excellence, vitality, and diversity of American arts are effectively showcased abroad and provides an opportunity to engage foreign audiences to increase mutual understanding.

NOTE: Because of the extraordinary events occurring in Egypt during the past months, the 2012 Exhibition has been postponed and a new opening date has not been set.

Program Length

Traditionally, the exhibition has been open for three months, December through February.

Eligibility and Application Overview

Public applications are accepted.

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. - based non-profit museum, school, galleries, or a visual arts organization subject to 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. tax code
  • Be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status in the U.S. Artists whose work is proposed for representation must be U.S. citizens.

Independent curators wishing to apply must seek affiliation with a non-profit institution to take on the responsibility of fiscal management for the project. The Department encourages organizations that have not previously received international program funding from the USG to apply under this announcement.

Application Information

Potential applicants interested in organizing the Cairo or Venice Biennales are required to submit their proposals electronically through Grants.gov and in hard copy to the Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau. Please do not submit a proposal without first discussing your project with Cultural Programs Division at the U.S. Department of State.
