At-a-Glance

NSLI-Y students learn less-commonly studied foreign languages overseas through summer and academic year programs. Previous language study is not required, and language learners of all levels are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility and Application Overview

Public applications are accepted.

All applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen currently enrolled in, or just graduated from, high school;
  • Be 15-to-18 years old at the start of the program; and
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

The deadline for 2013-14 programs has passed and applications for 2014-15 will be accepted in the fall of 2013.

Program applications are available online through the U.S. Department of State partner organization, American Councils.
