Tijana, an American Councils-placed American Serbia and Montenegro Youth Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE) student from Serbia, is always willing try new things and help others. Her host family and community describe her as always being positive, conscientious, reliable, hard-working, self-motivated, appreciative, and sensitive to the needs of others. Tijana was continuously available to students at her school with academic challenges, often inviting them to her home to help them with their homework.

Tijana is an accomplished student; she earned a 4.8 GPA (while taking AP courses) and made both the Honor Roll and Headmaster’s List for her academic achievements. She was a member of the volleyball, soccer, and paddling teams and won statewide awards in the field of debate. Her debate coach says she is the strongest member of the school debate team he has ever worked with.

Tijana stayed busy outside of school, too. She volunteered 50 hours of community service at the public library. She participated in the Civic Education Workshop in Washington, DC and along with other members of her exchange cluster, completed a one-day legislative internship with a Hawaii state senator. Tijana noted that visiting the Lincoln Memorial was a highlight of her exchange year. She said, “I am always in such awe in the presence of greatness that I'm speechless.”

Tijana has been a role model not only for the A-SMYLE program but also a role model for youth in her host community.

Congratulation, Tijana!
