Application Process and Academic Year

The FLEX Application Process and Academic Year: 2009-10 Recruitment

Application and Screening: September - December

Administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS

- Round One: 16-question English Test

- Round Two: SLEP (Secondary Level English Proficiency) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Language Tests

- Round Three: Applications, Essays, Personal Interviews, and Group Activity

Selection: November - March

Administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS

- Applications are reviewed by American evaluators in the United States.

Notification: March - April

 - Finalists are notified and visa processing begins.

Pre-Departure Orientation for Selected Students: July-August

 - Students receive school and homestay placement information

- Students requiring additional language training or other orientation, including students with disabilities, arrive in advance of other students(Read full description)

- Students arrive in the U.S. for orientation and travel to homestay families

Academic Year: September-May

 - Mid-year orientation for students takes place in January

Special Programs: Throughout the School Year

- Civic Education Workshop (February)

- Students compete to attend a week-long workshop in Washington, DC

After the Academic Year: May - June

- Students Return Home!

Students Participate in Alumni Activities 

- American Councils helps students to plan alumni activities

- Alumni Small Grants Competition

- "Faces of FLEX" photo contest

- Lehigh University's Iacocca Institute Global Village for Future Leaders of Business and Industry
(Program alumni compete for limited number of positions)
