 Benjamin A Gilman International Program
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides scholarships to U.S. undergraduates with financial need for study abroad, including students from diverse backgrounds and students going to non-traditional study abroad destinations. Established under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, Gilman Scholarships provide up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit.
  • Deadline: March 1, 2012 
  • Participants: Undergraduates

 Intensive Summer Language Institutes in China and Egypt
The Intensive Summer Language Institutes in China and Egypt are six-week summer programs that provide the opportunity to study abroad to U.S. K-12 teachers and community college instructors of Chinese (Mandarin) and Arabic. Students enrolled in education programs who intend to teach these languages are eligible as well.
  • Deadline: March 2, 2012 
  • Participants: Teachers/Professionals

 Educational Seminars
The Educational Seminars provide U.S. and international elementary and secondary school teachers and school administrators with opportunities to improve their understanding of U.S. and international educational practices and approaches.
  • Deadline: March 30, 2012 (Argentina, Brazil, and Thailand)

 Community Solutions
The Community Solutions Program is a professional development program for the best and brightest global community leaders working in the fields of transparency and accountability, tolerance and conflict resolution, environmental issues and women’s issues.
  • Deadline: April 15, 2012
  • Participants: Organizations

Programs for High School Students

Congress – Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX)
The Congress–Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) offers German and American students a fully-funded academic year abroad. Participating students develop critical intercultural skills while learning what it's like to live and attend school in Germany.

German American Partnership Program (GAPP)
The German American Partnership Program supports partnerships and exchanges between high schools in the U.S. and schools in Germany.

Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program
American high school students on the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES Abroad) Program will spend one academic semester or year in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mali, Morocco, Oman, Thailand, and Turkey during the 2012-2013 academic year.

National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)
The State Department’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships to U.S. high school students and recent graduates interested in learning less-commonly studied foreign languages overseas.

Youth Leadership Programs
Youth Leadership Programs foster mutual understanding, respect, and civic engagement among young Americans and their international peers. Exchanges are three to four weeks in duration and involve youth ages 15-18, and adults who work with youth.

American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL)

The American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL)organizes and manages unique international educational exchanges for young political leaders (ages 25-40) worldwide.

Critical Language Enhancement Awards

The Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA) provides funding for three-to-six months of intensive language study. CLEA is available for eligible participants of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program who intend to use one of the selected languages.

Citizen Diplomat – National Council of International Visitors (NCIV)

Citizen diplomats are professionals, families, students, interns, and travelers who make an impact by reaching out to individuals from other countries to build bridges of mutual understanding. Find out how you can become one!

English Language Fellow

Through the English Language Fellow Program (EL Fellow) highly qualified U.S. educators in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) participate in 10-month-long fellowships at academic institutions throughout the world.

 English Language Specialists
The Department of State’s English Language Specialist Program recruits U.S. academics and professionals in the fields of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) to conduct programs overseas ranging from two weeks to four months. 
 Fulbright Program for Scholars
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program provides awards through an annual competition to approximately 1,200 U.S. scholars and professionals to lecture and/or conduct research at institutions in more than 125 countries in a wide variety of academic disciplines. Program duration ranges from a semester to an academic year. 
 Hosting Opportunities
There are a wide variety of hosting opportunities from inviting an international visitor to your home for a family meal, to providing a place to stay during a week-long training program to a semester or academic year. Learn more about hosting and how you can get involved.
