   Georgia native Maxwell Meyers fully embraced the YES Abroad program's ideals by going above and beyond to learn about his host country Macedonia and share his American culture through presentations at a local high school and volunteering with a living library project, among many other activities.

   Although apprehensive at first about jumping into Chinese-only classes, Mackenzie embraced her experience and has taken advantage of resources such as her tutors and classmates.

   Joey Johnson, a Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad Program (YES Abroad) participant, is the U.S. Department of State’s March 2019 American Abroad Student of the Month

5. Stevens Initiative

   The Stevens Initiative was launched in 2015 as a living memorial and to continue the legacy of U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens, who studied abroad in Europe and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco. The Initiative is a public-private partnership that is building global competencies and 21st century skills for young people in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa. Through virtual exchange, the Initiative connects youth through technology to collaborate and learn together, giving them access to a substantive international exchange. Through an open competition managed by the Aspen Institute, sub-grants are awarded to organizations to implement virtual exchanges.

6. December American Abroad Student of the Month: Hikaru Hayakawa

   Hikaru Hayakawa, a Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad Program (YES Abroad) participant, is the U.S. Department of State’s December 2019 American Abroad Student of the Month. Hikaru graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, and is currently a gap-year student in Skopje, North Macedonia.
