   National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships to U.S. high school students interested in learning less-commonly studied foreign languages overseas.

4. TechGirls: Fatma’s Story

   Before Fatma began her three week TechGirls exchange program in the United States, she had yet to venture outside of her “tiny slice of life in Yemen.”

5. Mastering Language, Translating Culture

   Georgia native Evangelista traveled to Suzhou, China during the summer of 2012 to study Chinese as a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) participant.

6. Finding Her Voice in Bosnia

   Katie’s passion for culture, language, and food was a perfect fit in Bosnia.

7. Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking: Exchange Builds Confidence

   Prior to the academic year Aaron spent in Russia as a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) participant, he had only given a few speeches to an audience – in English. A native of Portland, ME, Aaron never imagined that during his year abroad he would speak in Russian to an audience of World War II veterans.
