   State Department Sports Program Helps Young People with Disabilities in China

   

   Professionals from Mobility International USA, through a Sports Grant traveled to China to help young people with disabilities there become more involved in sports and to increase their self-confidence and involvement in the larger community.

   Sports Envoys in India: Empowering Youth through Baseball and Softball

   

   The State Department’s first-ever joint baseball and softball program sent MLB Hall-of-Famer Barry Larkin and Olympian Natasha Watley to India as Sports Envoys in Febuary 2013.

3. Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports in Morocco

   

   Working with the U.S. Embassy in Rabat, the U.S. State Department dispatched two former U.S. Women’s National Team players and one former coach to Morocco for a sports envoy program.

   Partnering with the NCAA, USA Basketball, and WNBA, the U.S. Department of State led a fast-paced and exciting basketball program surrounding the events of the Women’s NCAA Final Four.

   From March 31 to April 7, former U.S. Women’s National Team Soccer Players Linda Hamilton and Kate Sobrero-Markgraf headed up a female-focused sports envoy program in Chile.

   Partnering with USA Wrestling, the U.S. State Department brought members of the Mongolian men’s and women’s national freestyle wrestling teams and their coaches to New York.

9. U.S. State Department & NHL Partner for Ice Hockey Exchange with Russia

   

   The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs hosted a Russian delegation of 18 youth hockey players and their coaches, who participated in the first-ever ice hockey exchange between the two countries.

10. Bumping Up Efforts to Empower Women and Girls Worldwide: Gulf Nations Volleyball Coaches

    

    Under the State Department’s Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative, the Gulf Nations Volleyball Visitor Program brought 10 female volleyball coaches from Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and Yemen to the U.S. for activities focused on the development of sports programs for women and girls.
