Julian spent the fall semester attending the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and has made significant efforts to become involved in his local community by volunteering with a local food pantry, working part-time as a
certified respite caretaker, joining student organizations on campus, and playing in an ultimate frisbee league. Julian had the opportunity to meet the Mayor of La Crosse and has worked closely with his local government to attend and create events that foster intercultural exchange. During La Crosse’s Oktoberfest celebrations, Julian dressed up in traditional German Lederhosen.
Julian shares that figuring out his academic goals is one of the biggest obstacles he has overcome during his exchange. Like many young adults, Julian grappled with big questions about what to do with his life, including his studies and future career. For Julian, being a first-generation student who had never been admitted to a university before and studying in a different country made the challenge even more daunting. However, Julian realized that this year was a prime opportunity to explore different academic paths. With guidance from his college advisor, he enrolled in both Computer Science and Political Science courses. Now, he plans to continue his studies in Political Science back in Germany, and he is already deepening his knowledge by participating in discussion groups and attending talks on topics such as the Constitution.
Currently, Julian is one of five competitively selected German CBYX Young Professional participants taking part in the six-week Congressional Internship Program (CIP) in Washington, DC. Leading up to the experience, Julian shared his excitement to experience the legislative process firsthand, work with his host office’s constituents, and better understand the connections between German and American democracy. After his internship is over at the end of February, Julian looks forward to returning to La Crosse to work full time and spend more time with his host mom and host brother. Julian is grateful for his kind and fun host family and is happy to be their first foreign exchange student!
Julian reflects on his personal growth during his CBYX year, sharing, “Experiencing a different culture goes beyond simply visiting a place; it requires immersion in everyday life—building friendships, taking on responsibilities, and engaging with the community. This experience has boosted my confidence, shown me what I am capable of, and accelerated my personal growth.”
Congratulations, Julian!
