Shon’s host family describes him as being an incredibly talented, affable, and bright young man with a great sense of humor who doesn't let blindness stand in his way. Shon has almost straight A's and is well loved by the students and staff who have gotten to know him! Shon is incredibly eager and motivated to learn. He has been studying the more advanced “grade 2” level braille and using adaptive technology, opportunities that he didn’t have before coming to the United States. Shon pushes himself hard every day and has said that sometimes he thinks he is not learning enough. It is impressive how much he pushes himself to be better!
Shon recently shared, "I love America! This country is so good to me.” He continued, “In America, blind people have a future. I love being here!"
In his high school Disney-themed cabaret, Shon landed a solo performance of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.” He is also doing very well on the wrestling team. Shon has recently begun to pack lunch bags with Kids’ Food Basket and volunteers with the West Michigan Miracle League, a charitable organization which provides opportunities for people with physical and cognitive challenges to boost their confidence through baseball.
Particularly notable is the amazing fit between the Thebo family and Shon. The Thebos understand his needs of visual impairment as they have three children who are legally blind. Shon's biggest cheerleader, his host mother, has coordinated essential services and witnessed pivotal moments such as his first experience seeing more at close range with his first pair of glasses.
While this match is just perfect on paper, their relationship reflects a deep connection too. From playing with toys with his little adoring brothers, to being surprised with a host family celebration commemorating Kyrgyzstan's Independence Day, to trying new American foods (like his first corn dog), Shon brings joy to all who know him, and their lives are forever changed!
Congratulations, Shon!
