FLEX Student of the Month – April 2017

Milica Jordanov

We are pleased to announce Milica Jordanov, an ASSE-placed, Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) student from Serbia as the April 2017 FLEX Student of the Month. Milica has embraced all parts of the FLEX program with great enthusiasm since she arrived, both in school and in her community.

Placed in North Dakota, Milica jumps at the chance to be involved in anything she can. To date she has participated in Future Farmers of America; Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America; basketball; high school yearbook; and was invited to become a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. While competing in an FFA event, Milica took home the silver medal. In addition her basketball team made it all the way to State competitions.

Owing to her love of learning about American politics, and debating the issues of the day, she decided to intern at North Dakota Senator Heitkamp’s office in Bismarck for her ASSE leadership project. There she was able to meet and chat with ND Governor Doug Burgum. In addition to shadowing at the governor’s office, she also went to St. Joseph’s hospital in Dickinson, where she met an orthopedic surgeon and watched a knee cap replacement surgery.

Amazingly, Milica has completed over 250 volunteer hours. Milica has volunteered at a nursing home, where she plays bingo or does puzzles with the residents, at the haunted house and carnival for Halloween, local craft shows, concession stands at her school events, and at the food pantry on a regular basis. She also baked pies for Thanksgiving for people in need and helped paint the local health center. In school she is part of a mentoring program, where she meets with a student from a local elementary school every week. She has had four country presentations, and also continued teaching Serbian for 6th graders after the presentations because she saw how interested they were. Milica still regularly gets calls from the elementary school teachers to talk about Serbian traditions before each holiday. She has a passion for working with children.

Her host mom said: “Milica enjoys volunteering and working hard at anything she does! She is witty, sarcastic and a good story teller! We, as a family, have enjoyed having her in our lives and will continue our relationship even after she leaves. She is a great girl and will go far in life.”

Congratulations, Milica! Milica Jordanov
