May 2022 FLEX Student of the Month

We are pleased to announce Aisuluu Oskonbaeva from Kyrgyzstan as the FLEX May Student of the Month!  She is placed by World Link and hosted in Flushing, Michigan.

Aisuluuu is an outstanding student and FLEX participant, with straight As and 165 volunteer service hours!

For much of the year, Aisuluu has been helping low-income children prepare for shows at the non-profit, McCree Theatre.  Currently, they are working on a performance, “Young, Gifted, and Black.”  She has grown to love the children and they recently had a luncheon held in her honor to thank her for dedication.  Aisuluu also regularly volunteers for Awana Club’s Children’s Ministry.  She has helped in the classroom, during game nights, and penny drives for charitable causes.  She has assisted elementary school teachers with their daily tasks and has volunteered in a soup kitchen and packed gifts for children in need.  Aisuluu loves volunteering and seizing opportunities to promote mutual understanding, saying “I always find friends and adults interested in me and my country.  It’s always fun.”

Aisuluu’s most recent project for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) benefitted a new love she has found while in the United States:  dogs!  Aisuluu recruited her Student Leadership Club and International Club peers to make 120 dog toys out of old shirts and towels for the Genesee County Animal Shelter.  She also made cat toys for the Humane Society.  She’s already looking forward to organizing a project with her friends back home for GYSD 2023!

With 35 cultural presentations under her belt, Aisuluu has proven to be a great cultural ambassador.  She says the program has prepared her to be a successful alum when she returns home: “I learned how to organize, communicate, persuade, and be a good leader.  Every experience has an impact on my future.”

At school, she has been active in the International Club, Leadership Club, Key Club, and Rotary/Interact.  Through leadership club, she participated in a program called "Adopt-A-Teacher," in which she helped an elementary school teacher with grading papers or whatever else they needed.  Aisuluu also joined the tennis team.

All of her hard work earned her a place in the Top 10% of World Link's leadership program, which gave her the opportunity to travel to New York City for an advanced leadership conference.  Aisuluu got to tour the United Nations Headquarters, spoke with UN interns about their experience and how to get an internship, and learned how to find and apply for grants for her future projects.

No doubt, Aisuluu has a great future ahead of her as a FLEX alumna!

Congratulations, Aisuluu!
