We are pleased to announce Alexia Gheorghe from Romania as the FLEX November Student of the Month! She is placed by Pan Atlantic Foundation and hosted in Waterloo, Iowa.
Alexia has enthusiastically embraced the American high school experience! She swam for the school swim team, where she enjoyed getting to know her teammates and brought a great attitude to every practice and meet. Her coaches appreciated her hard-work and team spirit. She also joined the debate club and West High School’s student council.
In addition, Alexia landed the role of Kendra Silberling in the school’s production of Trap. She loves rehearsals and is excited about getting to know more students through theater.
A motivated student, Alexia has been taking several AP courses, as well as a variety of electives, and maintains straight A’s! Alexia reports that her most challenging class, AP Psychology, is also her favorite because she has learned so much from it.
Alexia really shines, though, when it comes to interacting with others. She makes friends wherever she goes! Her host family says, “She genuinely cares about every individual she meets and makes them feel appreciated. She is a true friend and sincere in cheering others on.”
Though an only child in Romania, Alexia has naturally stepped in as big sister to her six host siblings. Her host family reports that she sets an example of responsibility, kindness, and positivity for them. She lovingly lets the little ones climb all over her, and she seeks out the older ones for conversation and activities. Alexia helps out around the home and is fully part of the family. She’s cooked several Romanian dishes for her family and is planning a ‘Romanian week’ for them to experience her culture. Her host family’s favorite dish so far is papanasi, a type of doughnut. “Ceva bun!” (Delicious!) Congratulations, Alexia!
