April 2023 CBYX U.S. Participant of the Month

We are pleased to announce Kristian Nelsen as the April 2023 CBYX U.S. Participant of the Month! Kristian, a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) High School participant recruited by YFU, is hosted by the Martschewski family in Riesa, Saxony.

Kristian, who plays trumpet and is part of his U.S. high school’s marching band, joined the local orchestra in his German host community. He enjoys this new outlet for his interest in music and is finding ways to share a part of America through music as well. Around Thanksgiving, he played the "The Star-Spangled Banner" from his host family’s front yard and also performed the U.S. national anthem at his school, and his host family and friends enjoyed the performances.

Kristian is keeping busy playing in the local orchestra but also looks forward to volunteering at an after-school care center for elementary school children at the end of April. He attended after-school care as a child and fondly remembers how fun it was playing with the staff. He is glad that he’ll be able to be a similarly positive and fun role model for these children.

Kristian believes his experiences on the CBYX program are having a profound impact on his personal growth. Living in a foreign country is challenging Kristian to step outside of his comfort zone and experience new situations, people, and cultures. He explains that he is becoming more open and talkative while on program. When he first arrived in Germany, it was difficult for him to meet people, but he has learned to become a much better communicator. He explains, “I’ve met a lot of new people, and it’s been fun. Meeting new people can be awkward at first, but I feel more comfortable and confident in my communication skills now.” Kristian thinks he’ll use these new interpersonal skills – along with other skills he is developing on program such as independence, adaptability, and resiliency – when he returns to the U.S.

Prior to leaving for his exchange year, Kristian thought he would pursue a career in education, but his experiences on the CBYX program are helping him realize that he is also interested in politics and international studies. Throughout his year in Germany, he has been introduced to German politics and had the opportunity to go on a tour of the Bundestag. Learning that many young people serve in the Bundestag inspired him to become more politically active. He says, “Being overseas is eye opening. It would be interesting to do a job that requires international communication or diplomacy. I’m realizing I like interacting with other cultures and people to broaden my perspective and understanding of the world.” He adds, “Being immersed in a different culture is exposing me to different ways of thinking, living, and interacting with others. I’m gaining a deeper appreciation for diversity and an understanding of how different cultures shape people's values, beliefs, and behaviors.”

Congratulations, Kristian!
