FLEX December Student of the Month

The FLEX Student of the Month for December is Dilbar Odilova from Uzbekistan.

She was placed by World Link in Reedly, California. Her host mom describes her as, “undoubtedly one of themost mature, responsible, motivated, and helpful people I know. Dilbar craves new experiences and there is not one opportunity that she has said no to.”

Her 80 hours of community service include serving meals at a local soup kitchen and volunteering at National Night Out, a non-profit opera house, the Otis Tolbert Memorial Golf Tournament, and Kingsburg Crayfish Festival. She also made “samsa” for Multicultural Day, dressed as Scruff McGruff, representing the police department for Dinuba’s Dog Days, and taught the children “Laylak Keldi,” an Uzbek national game in Kennedy Elementary School’s after-school program.

Dilbar’s host mom noted, “Her love for her culture is so evident in the way she cooks and shares her national dishes, the traditional clothing she wears, and her pride in Uzbekistan.” She kicked off International Education Week (IEW) with a video, teaching online viewer show to make an Uzbek fruit drink and a joint presentation for children at church with another FLEX student, Aliana from Kazakhstan. Before IEW, she’d given multiple presentations to her peers and baked traditional desserts for them, her teachers, and school staff as part of World Link’s Kindness Cookies Project.

Her teachers have praised her insightfulness, helpfulness, and desire to learn. She’s made many friends through her active involvement in Key Club; Fusion, a club organizing activities for students with disabilities; and AME, a game design club that compliments her Advanced Animated Game Design class. She put herself out there and ran for homecoming queen. Soon, Dilbar will be trying her first sport of the year, wrestling.

Her host family shared, “Hosting Dilbar the last 3 months has been such a joy. Dilbar has brought an energy to our home that was missing, and I look forward everyday to learn of her newest idea to succeed in not only her exchange program but in life.“
