Chantsaldulam (Chantsaa) never lets her visual impairment hold her back from living fully and giving to others. She is a willing contributor to her host family, a dedicated student, and an inquisitive and cheerful person. She embraces new experiences, even when outside her comfort zone. This year she has learned to ski, swim, and play the ukulele. While Chantsaa has thrown herself into her American experience, she has also gone above and beyond sharing her home culture, introducing her host family to games, artwork, food, and traditions that she enjoys in Mongolia.
Chantsaa’s teachers all have positive words to say about her, each highlighting her dedication and integrity. One teacher commented, “When Chantsaa doesn't understand something, she asks questions or works hard to find the answers herself. She is internally motivated to learn, grow, and succeed.” Chantsaa shares her bubbly personality and sense of humor with those around her. She is eager to communicate with others about her experiences, including those she has had in both Mongolia and the United States. Recently, Chantsaa celebrated mastering contracted braille, saying, "Learning contracted braille is one of my big purposes." What a great touchpoint for success!
Although she does not have any pets in Mongolia, Chantsaa discovered an affinity for dogs and has devoted many hours volunteering through her school (the Washington State School for the Blind) to make dog and cat toys for the local humane societies and animal shelters. Chantsaa worked together with a teacher to create the Cats & Mats club, which meets twice a week to make cat and dog toys for the local Humane Society. Chantsaa faithfully attends each session and works until the bell rings. She has produced dozens of braided cat and dog toys, pom poms, and snuffle mats. This experience has sparked an interest in having a guide dog of her own someday. Additionally, she has volunteered with the local community library, as she enjoys audiobooks and working with young students.
Chantsaa's enthusiasm and determination have a positive impact on all those around her. She has clear goals for her future, and she has made a point to take advantage of all the opportunities available to her while here in the United States that may help turn her dreams into her future reality.
Congratulations, Chantsaa!
