Jelena, an American Councils student from Serbia, is extremely enthusiastic and energetic. She is an honor student, speaks fluent Italian, and is a member of the varsity volleyball team and student council. Jelena is using skills she learned in her journalism class to work on a student council project to film an anti-bullying message video and to help broadcast her school’s basketball games. Jelena also gave 20 IEW presentations, and even though IEW is over, she intends to give more.

In addition to her active school schedule, Jelena has also found time to complete 65 volunteer hours. She helped plan a Valentine’s Day party for residents of a seniors’ nursing home and took one of the residents, a 92 year-old gentleman, to visit a Serbian museum. She also plans to work as an aide to lend a hand at one of the local elementary schools.

Jelena was selected to attend the A-SMYLE Civic Education Workshops in Washington, D. C. She also won 2nd place in the American Councils IEW contest for “Best Written Response”, was featured in the American Councils 2013 Recipe Calendar for sharing her Serbian gingerbread cookies recipe, and plans to enter the CSIET magazine cover design contest as well as the American High School Experience video contest. Jelena is a talented leader and fantastic representative of the A-SMYLE program and Serbia.

Congratulations, Jelena!
