“I have always been an adventurous child,” says Natalija. “So when I found out about the opportunity to enroll in A-SMYLE, I knew I must at least try. I wanted to experience a different culture, customs, and traditions, meet new people and have new memories. I also wanted the world to know about my country, Serbia, which I am very proud of.”
Since starting her program, Natalija has completed over 112 hours of community service.
“Some of the greatest experiences I have had in America are connected to volunteering and helping others,” says Natalija. “I am a Chicago TopSoccer Buddy, which means I help children with disabilities play soccer and have fun. While helping at VietNow, I volunteered by wrapping presents and food for underprivileged families. I also volunteered at the Salvation Army with my friends; we were ringing Christmas bells and helping the Salvation Army raise charity money.”
Natalija has had much personal and academic success since starting her program. But she admits most of it is due to the love and support of her host family.
“My host family is absolutely fantastic,” exclaims Natalija. “My host mom has been like a mother to me, that's why I call her mom. She is always there for me with wise advice and smile on her face. My host family helped me a lot through my American experience. They watched my tennis matches; they celebrated my Serbian holidays, and offered me a safe and beautiful place to live in. They treated me as their own; I was never called ''exchange student'' but daughter or sister. I couldn't ask for more!”
Natalija believes her A-SMYLE experience has changed her life and hopes more students will step up and apply to the program.
“The A-SMYLE program helped me grow as a person,” says Natalija. “I became more independent. I try not to waste my time, and spend it with people I love here, doing what I love, helping and enjoying my stay in the U.S. People here are very open, talkative, positive, and hard-working-- just as in my country!”
“I am richer for this amazing experience. I understand American culture, traditions, and lifestyle. I have travelled with my host family throughout the United States. I have seen the Tennessee Mountains as well as the Florida coast.”
“The experience also helped me appreciate American government even more. By seeing the problems American people face, and by experiencing the American culture and everyday life, I appreciate the effort the American government makes.”
“This is definitely the greatest experience of my life. It changed me indeed, but in a great way! Unforgettable events, American high school, new friends, and fabulous cities. But most important: people that love you and care for you - your host family.”
