Emina Mulic, a World Link A-SMYLE student from Montenegro, is having a full and well-rounded exchange year. As a community volunteer, Emina has been involved in a variety of projects and to date has volunteered 92 hours of community service. She worked with Toys for Tots, a Police K-9 dog show, and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and she raised money to support breast cancer research. Emina also participated in several other group volunteer projects, including a disability run, community festivals, fundraising dances and carnivals, special needs sports competitions, school assemblies, floats, and raffles. She was a leader in a special “Breaking Down the Walls” program at school, which was designed to prevent bullying by encouraging others to accept people’s differences.
Emina is an enthusiastic participant in school clubs; she is a member of Interact, the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (NJROTC), French Club, German Club, and the school choir. She was elected the Assistant Public Affairs Officer for the NJROTC program and has the responsibility of taking pictures and writing articles for the program’s website and newsletter. She also participates in local veterans’ events, parade marching, and fundraisers.
Emina is a skilled athlete. She joined several school sports teams including tennis, badminton, and swimming, which is a new sport for her, and worked as a coach’s assistant for the basketball team. Emina enjoys taking on leadership roles in the classroom. She led a group of 15 classmates in an English class project, coordinating the project plan and giving their presentation to the rest of the class.
Emina creatively presents Montenegrin culture to audiences by sharing the art of her country to the art class; teaching small groups how to make special Montenegrin coffee; and sharing national food, songs, traditional dance, and the alphabet.
Emina’s friends and host family say she always has a smile on her face and is one of the most positive and friendly people they know. She was thrilled to be selected to participate in the Civic Education Workshop in Washington, DC and has organized a Global Youth Service Day project designed to raise awareness about global hunger and poverty.
Congratulations, Emina!
