DanceMotion USA, 2013 Tour
Doug Varone, Artistic Director - Doug Varone and Dancers: We're here in Washington D.C. to do an outreach program talking about the creativity of choreography.
DanceMotionUSA is a program, it's a joint program, between the State Department and BAM, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the premise behind it is to take dance, contemporary American dance, and to travel it, and expose it and use it as a cultural element abroad to various countries.
Donald Byrd, Artistic Director - Spectrum Dance Theater: The part about cultural exchange that has the most possibility is in fact the opportunity to meet people that come from different cultures than what we come from.
And what's exciting about that is that there is an opportunity there for certain kinds of barriers around stereotyping, around preconceived notions, for those things to be broken down.
Doug Varone: Dance does everything. I mean, everything we do in life is dance. The way we walk we is dance, the way I gesture is dance, how we live as human beings, as far as I'm concerned as a dance maker, is dance. But also the steps that we use -- very often it defines our cultures.
Donald Byrd: And I think what we are taking with us on this tour is this sensibility, this very American thing.
Doug Varone: So my company and myself are going this spring not only to perform but most importantly to talk about the just power of dancing and how it connects people.
